Working with PDFs: choose the right way to merge, compress, or scan
Summary: For ordinary PDFs, a trusted desktop or built-in phone tool may be enough to merge pages, reduce file size, or scan paper. Before uploading a document to an online converter, check whether it contains personal or confidential information and how the service handles files.

Merge or extract pages
Make a copy first, then select the pages you need and verify page order in the exported file. If a document is digitally signed, editing or merging can invalidate the signature or change how the signature is verified.
Reduce file size carefully
Compression may lower image resolution or discard metadata. Compare text and diagrams after export, especially if the recipient must print or read small labels. Keep the original in case the compressed copy is too soft.
Scan paper documents
Place the page in even light, keep all edges in frame, and review the scan for readable text. OCR can make text searchable, but always check names, numbers, and dates against the original.
Frequently asked questions
Is an online PDF compressor private?
Privacy depends on the provider's file handling and retention policy. Do not upload sensitive records unless you trust the service and understand its terms.
Can I edit a signed PDF?
You can alter a copy, but changes may invalidate its digital signature. Preserve the signed original and check with the recipient before modifying it.
